5-a-side Football
Sunday August 11th saw the Southport Blues win Shaw Hall Football Challenge. The club entered several teams in this 5-a-side competition and they dominated their division. The teams consisted two adults and three children. After winning their league to knock one team out of the competition two City sides faced each other in the semi-final. After a hard fought game played in slippy conditions the strangley titled Barrow Boys reached the final and had to face the reigning champions from Shaw Hall.

The game took place in front of an enthusiastic crowd fully expecting to see the most entertaining game of the afternoon. The first half was very tight but the Blues went into the break with a 1-0 lead. In the second half Shaw Hall began to press but the City lads kept their shape and two goals from David Ball secured the victory. Goalkeeper Kev Wharton was so confident in the quality of his defence that he spent the majority of the game with a beer in his hand.

The game finished with the Blues worthy winners and the spirit of friendship between the sides that had built throughout the afternoon continued in the bar!

A special thanks goes to Mark Monaghan and his helpers for organising the afternoon and the Blues will be back next year to defend their title.
