World Cup Sweep Stake Winners
Congratulations go to Kev Wharton and Pete Gresty who rather luckily won the recent World Cup Draw

  Race Night at Haydock Park
The club enjoyed a very successful night at Haydock Race Course on Friday July 5th. The excited party met at WD Suttons in Southport and left for a short, but highly entertaining journey down the motorway to Haydock. Due to the highly efficient planning of our Chairman we were able to enjoy a few drinks at a local pub before the group split into a Big Brother Style Rich Side/Poor Side at the racecourse. Those with a bit of class made their way to the Tattersall Stand and those with large quantities of beer on the minds went to the 'Shed!'
The group on the 'Rich' side managed to back winners in 5 of the 6 races, which for a group of novices is quite impressive. The 'Poor' side also had an equally successful night.
The night was thouroughly enjoyed by all and plans are already afoot for another similar event next year.

Fight Night with Ricky 'The Hitman' Hatton
Saturday June 1st saw fellow blue Ricky Hatton take Eamon Magee in a world title fight and several members of the Southport Blues were there to cheer him on.
The group met at Victoria Station next to the MEN Arena and were greeted with the sight of huge numbers of the Greater Manchester Constabulary and their very hungry dogs! After successfully navigating their way through the airport style security the group found their seats and waited excitedly for the bout to start.
Magee had brought some fairly vocal support with him from Belfast but, as we all know, nobody can out sing the blue choir when it is in full voice. Hatton made his appearance to Blue Moon which was heartily sung by his followers.
The bell rang for the start of the first round and battle commenced. Being a City fan Hatton had to give his fans an early shock and was promptly knocked to the canvas in the first round! This blow was nothing more than a tap from the Irishman Magee but it got his supporters cheering.
Their raucous chanting was met and beaten by the thousands of Hatton fans packed into the MEN Arena.
After the initial skirmishes there were numerous rounds in which Hatton out punched his valiant opponent. Magee took almost everything that Hatton threw at him. The Hatton fans were urging their man to attack which he did with gusto and Magee stayed in his corner for most of the fight. Was Hatton too good for him or was Magee following the Ali 'rope-a-dope' gameplan? Only time would tell. After 12 rounds of absorbing boxing the decision went to the judges and Hatton was declared the winner by a unanimous decision.
This brought yet more choruses of Blue Moon to ring round the MEN Arena and the vast majority of the, mostly blue, crowd went home happy.
